The Maritime Union says KiwiRail is proposing to cut 70 jobs in the Aratere ferry's catering and deck departments. The ship is expected to be retired by the end of August to allow for new port infrastructure construction in Picton. New rail-enabled ferries are not scheduled to arrive until 2029.
