Man charged with attempted murder after Myers Park assault

A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following an assault on a child at Myers Park in central Auckland on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred at approximately 4.45pm near a playground.

The child was taken to Starship Children's Hospital and is currently in a serious but stable condition. The 20-year-old man, who was taken into custody at the scene, remains in hospital in serious condition due to self-inflicted injuries.

Police have completed their examination of the scene and have removed the cordons that were previously established around the playground. Superintendent Sunny Patel stated that the child's family is being supported and that police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick confirmed she had been in contact with local police following the assault. Police have appealed for anyone with photos or video of the event to contact them using file number 261025/2283.
