The Commerce Commission has provisionally approved a deal allowing major power generators to build a 600,000-tonne coal stockpile. Genesis, Meridian, Contact, and Mercury plan to use the reserves at the Huntly station to maintain electricity supplies during periods of threat. The arrangement follows warnings that Genesis might retire a thermal unit in early 2026.
