Former Prime Minister Helen Clark has stated that New Zealand is falling behind the rest of the world by not recognising Palestinian statehood. This comes as Canada, the UK, and France have announced plans to recognise Palestine. Foreign Minister Winston Peters has resisted calls to do the same, warning it could be viewed as rewarding terrorism.
