The mural was originally painted in 2018 by artist Tyler Kennedy Stent for Sheeran's three Dunedin concerts. Stent expressed support for the previous graffiti, stating the tag was a "welcome addition to the mural". He also said he supported artists taking such a stance because "the international community is failing Palestinians profoundly".![]()

The vandalism follows controversy regarding Sheeran's tour, after rapper Macklemore was removed from the lineup for making pro-Palestinian comments. Sheeran stated that the decision to end Macklemore's contract was made by the promoter, Messina Touring Group, rather than himself. Sheeran later addressed the situation on stage, saying the Israeli military's actions in Gaza were "catastrophic and unjustifiable".![]()
