A coroner has recommended nationwide compulsory lifejacket laws for small vessels following the 2022 deaths of Gemma Ferregel and her son, Ryder. The pair drowned after their boat capsized in Manukau Harbour during a scalloping trip. The coroner found that wearing lifejackets would have significantly increased their chances of survival.
