Aged Care Commissioner Carolyn Cooper has criticised Health New Zealand Southern following the 2019 death of an elderly man during brain surgery. The investigation found that the patient suffered a heart attack and blood loss while being operated on by an inexperienced and uncredentialled surgeon. The matter has been referred to the Health and Disability Commissioner.
