A 13-year-old Auckland boy died in January after falling 15 to 20 metres from a cliff onto rocks at Hāhei Beach. The boy was holidaying with a friend when the pair climbed the cliff face after paddleboarding. A coroner suggested the children may not have understood the climbing risks.
