More than 50 small earthquakes recorded near Taupō overnight

Over 50 small, shallow earthquakes occurred just north of Taupō between Thursday evening and Friday morning. GeoNet reported a higher than normal frequency of activity, including a 2.8 magnitude quake. GNS Science noted that such swarms are common in geothermal areas.
