Thousands of lightning strikes hit upper North Island overnight

Severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain and intense lightning to the upper North Island overnight. While more than 5,000 strikes were recorded across the region, many occurred over Kaipara Harbour. MetService has forecast possible further thunderstorms from Tuesday morning through to Wednesday.
