One person dead and three injured in Kawarau Falls crash

A single-vehicle crash near Kawarau Falls, close to Queenstown, has resulted in one death and three injuries. The incident occurred on State Highway 6, also known as Kingston Road, between the intersections of Peninsula Road and Boyd Road. Emergency services responded to the crash shortly before 4am on Sunday morning.

One person died at the scene, while two people suffered serious injuries and one person sustained critical injuries. Fire and Emergency New Zealand reported that the vehicle left the road and hit a tree, requiring the rescue of four people. Crews from Frankton and Queenstown attended the scene, with a second Queenstown crew arriving with cutting equipment to extricate people from the vehicle.

The Serious Crash Unit is attending the site. Although one lane of the highway remained open, the road is expected to be closed for a period of time. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
