Christchurch and South Canterbury are replacing their red, orange, and yellow tsunami evacuation zones with a single blue zone starting Tuesday, 6 October. This change follows updated tsunami modelling and a national requirement for councils to move to a single zone by 2031.The Press

The new blue zone covers areas most likely to be affected by a tsunami, including the Redruth area, the Timaru landfill area near Saltwater Creek, Caroline Bay, and much of the Washdyke industrial area. While all properties in former red and orange zones are included, some areas previously in yellow zones may no longer require evacuation. The Press

James Thompson, regional manager for Canterbury Civil Defence and Emergency Management, said, “Moving to a single blue tsunami evacuation zone means there is one consistent message about when to evacuate and where people need to go”. He advised that if people feel a long or strong earthquake, they should move inland or to higher ground immediately. The Press

The transition marks the beginning of the removal of Christchurch's 45 tsunami warning sirens following a June 2025 council decision. The council will instead install dedicated tsunami information signs to help people identify if they are in the evacuation zone. The Press
