An early learning service in Ponsonby has temporarily closed following concerns regarding potentially asbestos-contaminated rangoli powder. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has issued recall notices for five rangoli powder products. These products are commonly used for crafting and during cultural celebrations like Diwali.NZ HeraldRNZ

The Education Review Office (ERO) confirmed it was notified of the closure and stated that the service has taken steps to manage health and safety risks. The service has also informed parents about the situation. An ERO spokesperson said, “Where a potential asbestos risk is identified, services are expected to take precautionary measures, which may include restricting access to affected areas, seeking advice from licensed asbestos professionals, and taking any necessary steps to protect children and staff”.NZ HeraldRNZ

This incident follows previous concerns regarding asbestos in children's play sand sold at retailers such as Kmart and The Warehouse. That earlier recall led to the closure of at least 16 schools and seven early learning services. While MBIE initially suggested asbestos was unlikely to become airborne during normal use, an AUT study later indicated fibres could be released during play.NZ Herald

The potential asbestos issue involving the rangoli powder was reported in the Ministry of Education’s Early Learning Bulletin on September 3. ERO is currently following due process and monitoring compliance with licensing requirements.NZ HeraldRNZ
