Kiwis utility Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad has revealed he contemplated returning to the Cook Islands for the Rugby League World Cup. The 31-year-old, who played three tests for the Cook Islands in 2015 before switching to New Zealand in 2019, considered the move as competition for the Kiwis fullback jersey increased. Nicoll-Klokstad believes his ability to play multiple positions, including five-eighth, wing and centre, helped him secure his place in the New Zealand squad. He noted that if he were only an outright fullback, he might not have had the opportunity to represent his country this weekend. Despite his heritage, he decided not to switch back, stating he could not bring himself to give up on the Kiwis jersey.![]()

Speculation has arisen regarding the Kiwis' squad depth following an injury to fullback Kalyn Ponga, who broke the radius in his left arm during the tournament opener. While Ponga is not ruled out, coach Stacey Jones may need to call up an injury replacement if the broken arm does not heal. Hookers Wayde Egan and Phoenix Crossland have been training with the squad in Christchurch.![]()
Egan, who recently extended his Warriors contract until 2028, was not initially selected due to a prior commitment. Crossland is currently serving a four-match ban, which will conclude after the Kiwis' pool game against Fiji. The Kiwis face the Cook Islands at a sold-out One NZ Stadium on Sunday.![]()
