The court heard that on 15 June 2025, Smith and co-offender Tyler Sluce broke into a Christchurch home at approximately 3am while the occupants were overseas. The pair stole a $6500 vehicle and various items, including a 65-inch television and medication for an 11-year-old child. A 29-year-old mother of three addressed the court, stating that the burglary and arson had a profound impact on her family. She noted that the children became fearful of noises and being alone in the house.
