Leng Minn Kit has been fined $2000 plus court costs after pleading guilty to breaching a three-year restraining order. The North Shore District Court convicted Kit on 4 September. The order, issued by the Tenancy Tribunal in October 2024, prohibited him from renting out properties that were not maintained to a weathertight condition.Stuff1News

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Tenancy Compliance and Investigations Team brought the charge. Prosecutors stated that Kit granted a tenancy at a North Shore property in June 2025 while it was not weathertight and in poor repair. The court declined to reduce the sentence, noting the importance of protecting tenant health and safety.Stuff1News

In a separate August 2026 Tenancy Tribunal decision, Kit was ordered to pay more than $11,000 in costs, compensation, and exemplary damages for failing to follow work orders. The tribunal also issued orders requiring the property to be made weathertight. Kit has appealed this decision to the District Court, and the appeal is currently pending.Stuff1News

National manager Brett Wilson said, “Tenants deserve homes that are safe, healthy and properly maintained. In this case, more than one tenant has had to endure sub-standard housing due to Mr Kit’s failure to meet his obligations”. He added that Kit had previously failed to comply with an improvement notice issued by MBIE.Stuff1News
